Why the Aviation Industry in Morocco Could become Africa’s Biggest

Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, announced that the aviation industry in Morocco intends to engage in sophisticated sectors within the aviation industry, emphasizing advanced digital technologies, innovation, research, and development. During the seventh session of the Marrakech International Air Show, Akhannouch stated, “Efforts have been made to establish six integrated systems for a high-performance aviation industry, which encompass assembly, engineering, maintenance, electrical wiring systems, engines, and their components. Additionally, two integrated supply systems have been developed in collaboration with leading global aviation companies, specifically Boeing and Collins.”

He highlighted that the achievements in this sector have positioned Morocco as a prominent international hub in aviation, in partnership with major global firms. Furthermore, the country has emerged as a primary source for spare parts and aircraft components across the African continent.

Morocco and France have formalized investment agreements exceeding $10 billion.

Akhannouch noted that the current success in this domain can be traced back to the late 1990s, when Royal Air Maroc and the Safran Group initiated a joint venture for engine maintenance and repair, which significantly bolstered the Kingdom’s expertise and facilitated the development of skilled personnel.

Beginning in 2000, Morocco commenced the production of electrical wiring for the aviation sector, subsequently establishing itself as a key international player in the aviation industrial landscape and a preferred destination for subcontracting in this area.

He emphasized that the aviation industry in Morocco has evolved into a leading one, and as such, Morocco is fast becoming one of the leading regional aviation platforms in Africa. This is shown by its rise from 36th place globally in 2012 to 26th place in 2023, showcasing the strategic sector’s capabilities.
