Air Cairo has placed a firm order for 15 Airbus A320neo aircraft at El Alamein International Airshow 2026, marking a significant step in the Egyptian carrier’s long-term fleet expansion strategy.
Announced on the opening day of EIAS 2026, the agreement represents Air Cairo’s first direct aircraft acquisition from Airbus. Until now, the airline has built much of its Airbus fleet through leased aircraft.
The move will introduce directly owned aircraft alongside the carrier’s leased fleet, giving Air Cairo a greater degree of flexibility as it continues one of the most ambitious expansion programmes currently underway among Egyptian airlines.
From seven aircraft to more than 130
Air Cairo has expanded rapidly in recent years. Five years ago, the airline operated just seven aircraft. Today, its fleet has grown to more than 45 aircraft, according to Airbus, with the carrier planning to operate more than 130 aircraft by 2034.
The 15 newly ordered A320neos will support that growth across Air Cairo's domestic, regional and international networks, providing additional capacity while improving the airline's operational and financial flexibility.
Air Cairo Chairman and CEO Hussein Sherif described the agreement as a natural progression for the airline as it scales its operations.
Combining owned aircraft with our leased fleet gives us greater operational flexibility and financial efficiency as we scale up.
Sherif said the A320neo will provide Air Cairo with the capacity required to expand its network while responding to increasing travel demand to and from Egypt.
The airline has placed growing emphasis on international expansion and fleet modernisation. In August, Air Cairo announced the addition of another A320neo to its fleet as part of its plans to increase capacity and strengthen its presence in regional and international markets.
Air Cairo strengthens its relationship with Airbus
For Airbus, the order also represents a new stage in its relationship with the Egyptian carrier.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President Sales of Airbus' Commercial Aircraft business, described the agreement as a reaffirmation of Air Cairo's confidence in the A320neo as the airline enters its next phase of expansion.
The significance of the agreement goes beyond the addition of 15 aircraft. Direct ownership gives Air Cairo another tool for managing its future fleet composition, complementing leasing as the airline expands toward its 2034 target.
Air Cairo received its first Airbus A320neo in 2021 through ICBC Leasing. At the time, the airline operated a fleet of only seven Airbus aircraft, highlighting the scale of the transformation that has taken place over the past five years.
Why the A320neo?
The A320neo has become a core aircraft for airlines operating short and medium-haul networks around the world.
Airbus says the A320neo incorporates new-generation engines, aerodynamic improvements and Sharklets, delivering up to 20% lower fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions per seat compared with previous-generation aircraft.
For Air Cairo, those economics are particularly relevant as the airline increases frequencies and expands connectivity between Egypt and destinations across Europe, Africa and the Middle East.
The commonality of the A320 Family also allows Air Cairo to expand without introducing an entirely new aircraft platform into its Airbus operations.
A major commercial announcement on EIAS 2026 opening day
The agreement was announced as the second edition of El Alamein International Airshow officially opened at El Alamein International Airport on Tuesday.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi inaugurated the event alongside Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides and other senior officials and industry representatives. The opening programme included an exhibition tour followed by flying displays involving the Egyptian Air Force and international teams from several countries.
EIAS 2026 runs from 8 to 10 September, bringing together organisations from the commercial aviation, aerospace, defence and space sectors.
Air Cairo's 15-aircraft commitment gives the show an early commercial aviation milestone and places the Egyptian carrier's rapid expansion firmly among the major stories emerging from the first day in El Alamein.
